Our verdict

Bobcat ZS4000 48

The ZS4000 48 combines a commercial drive package and an AirFX deck with a standing operator station. It is worth comparing for a route with landscaped areas and frequent stops, provided the operator is comfortable with the format. Its value should be judged against a complete work routine, not simply the promise of agility.

A specific configuration, not a family average

Bobcat's specification sheet maps 9994002 to the 48-inch AirFX model with a Kawasaki FX651V and Hydro-Gear ZT-3400 transaxles. The current North American table lists 20.5 hp and a forward maximum of 10.5 mph. This is not the FT730 EFI engine offered in the larger configurations, nor the ZT-3100 drive listed for the 36-inch machine.

That distinction matters when comparing an advertisement or dealer quotation. Ask for the factory model number rather than accepting an engine figure or deck description copied from the largest ZS4000.

Try the pad and platform together

The documented operator platform is dampened and can flip up and latch. The rider pad is removable for service. During a demonstration, check control reach with your usual footwear, how the pad supports your stance and how easily you can perform the ordinary mounting and dismounting routine with the machine safely stopped.

Those features are not proof that standing will be less tiring for you than sitting. The seated Bobcat ZT3500 48 is a relevant same-width comparison when that question remains unresolved. Our standing-versus-seated guide suggests a route-based way to compare them.

Separate the warranty periods

Bobcat's September 2026 limited warranty lists the ZS4000 at 60 months or 2,000 hours, whichever comes first. Transaxles have a separate 36-month period with the same 2,000-hour ceiling. Engine warranty is handled separately. Do not turn the overall five-year description into a claim that every component has identical coverage.

Have the supplying dealer confirm which document applies to the machine and delivery date, and include service transport arrangements in the quote. Coverage length alone does not establish repair turnaround or future reliability.

Our buying view

Shortlist the 48-inch ZS4000 when its AirFX/FX651V/ZT-3400 combination and standing position fit the route. Compare the Gravely Z-Stance 48 if you want to weigh a different control layout, drive package and warranty cap. We have not measured a cutting, handling or time-saving advantage between them. Research checked October 10, 2026.

Our ZT Score

7.9/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.

  • Cut quality (30%): 8.1/10. AirFX deck with model-specific anti-scalp provisions supports the design assessment; actual finish and discharge quality have not been measured.
  • Build & durability (25%): 8.3/10. ZT-3400 transaxles and documented commercial chassis are substantial equipment; component-specific coverage is accounted for without predicting lifespan.
  • Comfort (20%): 7.8/10. Dampened platform and support pad are useful features, but standing comfort requires a personal demonstration.
  • Value (15%): 7.2/10. The package can suit a commercial route, subject to delivered price, service arrangements and acceptance of the separate transaxle coverage period.
  • Ease of use (10%): 8.0/10. Flip-up platform and removable pad support access, while mounting and control reach still need an operator-specific check.

Provisional editorial judgement from manufacturer documentation, not a hands-on test. Comparative mowing finish, operator fatigue and longevity have not been measured, and reliable model-specific owner consensus has not been established. Comfort assesses the documented standing operator station, not a seat. Value is conditional on a current delivered quote and the intended workload; no such US or Canadian dealer quote was verified.
