  • +Isolated operator platform and standard hour meter
  • +48-inch fabricated deck with a 1.5-to-5-inch height range

Our verdict

Ariens RIDGELINE 48

The RIDGELINE 48 brings a standing operator position to Ariens's residential range. It is worth investigating for a home lawn where you prefer that posture and want the option of walking behind the mower. Choose it because the working arrangement suits you, not because a standing platform automatically makes a mower commercial equipment.

What the 48-inch model includes

Ariens identifies 994167 on its model page. The linked specification sheet pairs a 22 hp Kawasaki FS651V with Hydro-Gear ZT-2800 transaxles and a 7 mph forward maximum. The 48-inch deck uses 10-gauge fabricated steel, three spindles and hand-operated lift. Its 1.5-to-5-inch height range differs from the smaller 32-inch model's range.

The sheet describes an isolated operator platform and explicitly supports standing or walk-behind operation. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the approved changeover and controls in each mode. A folding platform on another model does not, by itself, establish the same permission.

Check control reach while standing

Settle into the normal operating position before trying the deck-lift lever and steering controls. Then practice ordinary turns and stops in a suitable demonstration area. Check whether you can repeat those actions without shifting into an awkward stance. We have not tested vibration reduction or comfort over a mowing session.

The seated APEX 52 is a useful within-brand reference when deciding whether to stand or sit. Our operator-format comparison helps organize that choice around the route and the person using the mower.

Allow room for discharge and storage

Ariens lists 61 inches wide with the chute down and 49.5 inches with it raised. Measure the route using the approved configuration for each task; the raised-chute number is not permission to mow without discharge protection. Also check storage with the platform in the intended position rather than estimating space from the deck label.

If the standing format is attractive but your use is commercial, compare the Gravely Z-Stance 48 as a different package, including its drive and coverage. Do not treat similar appearance or equal cutting width as proof that the two machines are interchangeable.

Our buying view: RIDGELINE merits a demonstration for residential owners who specifically want standing and walking options. The published machine warranty is four years or 400 hours; obtain the complete applicable terms and a delivered quote. Research checked October 12, 2026. No field-test or owner-consensus result is claimed.

Our ZT Score

7.5/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.

  • Cut quality (30%): 7.6/10. Fabricated deck and documented height range support normal lawn work, without a measured finish advantage.
  • Build & durability (25%): 7.5/10. ZT-2800 transaxles and specified deck construction are useful equipment; no failure-rate evidence supports a longevity prediction.
  • Comfort (20%): 7.4/10. The isolated standing platform earns credit, while personal fit and fatigue remain untested.
  • Value (15%): 7.0/10. The two operating modes can suit a residential routine, subject to a complete quote and a meaningful demonstration.
  • Ease of use (10%): 7.8/10. Supported walking mode and an hour meter are practical; hand-lift reach and discharge clearance need checking.

Provisional research-based editorial assessment of documented equipment, not a hands-on test. Comparative finish, fatigue, fuel consumption and service life have not been measured. Reliable model-specific owner consensus and current delivered US or Canadian dealer quotes were not established. Value depends on the intended work, complete quotation and local service support.
