Our verdict

Walker H38i R64 Rear Discharge

H38i with the R64 deck is a front-deck Walker for discharging clippings onto the lawn. It serves a different purpose from the collection-focused C and T models: the mower should be chosen around the desired clipping result and complete footprint.

Pair the tractor with the correct deck

Walker's current H38i information specifies a 38 hp, 999cc Rehlko/Kohler ECH980 EFI engine, ZT-3400 transaxles and a ten-mph maximum. The fuel system has two independent 4.7-US-gallon tanks, providing 9.4 gallons total with a selector valve.

This review pairs that tractor with the R64 rear-discharge deck, part DR64-3. It is a 64-inch, three-blade, belt-driven deck intended for Model H. Name both tractor and deck on the quote; a tractor-only price or dimension would not describe the equipment reviewed here.

Plan for the complete front-deck footprint

Walker lists approximately 107 inches of length and 66 inches of width for H38i with R64. Check turns into storage and the working route, not merely a straight opening. The front deck's position is a meaningful layout difference from a conventional mid-mount mower.

Two adjustable footrests on R64 and the four-way adjustable Grammer suspension seat provide operator-fit options. Set them up before checking control reach. A parked fit check should be followed by an instructed demonstration on representative ground; no measured comfort advantage is claimed here.

Decide whether collection is needed

H38i is listed as non-collection equipment. The T27i GHS 48 is a more relevant Walker comparison when integrated grass collection is central to the job. Buying a rear-discharge machine does not automatically provide a bagging system.

Our rear-versus-side discharge guide separates discharge direction from mulching and collection. Ask to see the clipping result at the height and growth conditions you expect rather than assuming all rear-discharge decks behave identically.

The March 2026 operator manual gives the machine two-year limited coverage and ZT-3400 coverage of three years/3,000 hours. The drive coverage is prorated after 1,000 hours, and the engine is covered separately.

Our buying view: H38i R64 is worth evaluating for large maintained areas where front-deck access and rear discharge fit the work. Confirm storage space, operator setup and the complete tractor/deck cost. Research checked October 20, 2026.

Our ZT Score

8.1/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.

  • Cut quality (30%): 8.3/10. Purpose-built R64 deck supports rear-discharge work; finish remains untested across turf conditions.
  • Build & durability (25%): 8.2/10. ZT-3400 drive and documented front-deck package support the assessment, without predicting service life.
  • Comfort (20%): 8.4/10. Adjustable Grammer seating and deck footrests provide fit options; fatigue and ride are not measured.
  • Value (15%): 7.5/10. The layout can be useful for suitable large-area work, conditional on full package price and prorated coverage.
  • Ease of use (10%): 7.8/10. Separate speed control and adjustable footrests are useful; long dimensions and tank selection require familiarization.

Provisional research-based editorial assessment of documented equipment, not a hands-on test. We have not measured cut finish, comfort, fuel use or service life. Reliable model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian quotes were not established. Value depends on the complete configuration, workload and local support.
