Scag Freedom Z 52 Kohler 7000
The SFZ-52H-26KT is the 52-inch Kohler configuration of Scag's Freedom Z. It gives a wider pass than the Freedom Z 48, while retaining the ZT-2800 drive family. Choose the width around the work; a larger deck alone does not turn the machine into a different transmission class.
Use the model row, not the family headline
Scag's current specification table identifies this model with a 26 hp Kohler 7000 Series engine. The same page contains older family-level engine wording, so the exact model row is the reference used here. Confirm the engine label on the supplied mower before ordering service parts.
The Hero deck has reinforcement at the spindle locations. The ZT-2800 transaxles use spin-on filters; their presence is a reason to obtain the maintenance schedule, not a claim that the drive requires no attention.
Decide whether the extra pass width helps
The 52-inch version is listed at 53 inches in the transport configuration and 64.5 inches with the chute down. Measure the route in both contexts, keeping the required protection in place during operation. A deck that saves passes in an open area can be inconvenient near fixed obstacles.
Try the spring-assisted foot lift and the height settings you commonly use. The padded seat includes armrests, but fore-and-aft adjustment requires tools. Have it set for the operator before a demonstration; a poorly adjusted showroom seat is not a useful comfort comparison.
For another Scag package at 52 inches, compare the Patriot 52 by its exact engine and drive specification. The Freedom's 26 hp label should not replace that wider equipment comparison.
Separate standard and extended coverage
Scag's warranty page lists Freedom Z standard machine coverage of two years for commercial use or three years/500 hours for non-commercial use, with separate engine and other provisions. The same page advertises an extended-warranty program. Do not treat the extension as automatically included in a dealer's base quote.
Request written coverage for your use, region and serial number. Our warranty guide explains why component terms and hour limits matter.
The Freedom Z 52 is a candidate when its wider Hero deck fits a light commercial route or residential property and local support meets the service needs. We have not established fuel economy, cutting results or a price advantage; those should not be inferred from the model's power rating or eight-mph travel maximum.
Our ZT Score
7.3/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.
- Cut quality (30%): 7.6/10. Reinforced Hero deck supports setup; finish and clipping performance are untested.
- Build & durability (25%): 7.4/10. ZT-2800 service access and tubular frame are useful, but wider width does not upgrade the drive class.
- Comfort (20%): 7.0/10. Padded seat and armrests aid support; tools are needed for seat adjustment and ride is untested.
- Value (15%): 7.1/10. A wider pass may suit the job, but price advantage and running costs are not established.
- Ease of use (10%): 7.4/10. Assisted foot lift is useful; operating width and service intervals need planning.
Provisional research-based editorial judgement, not a hands-on test. We have not measured finish, ride, productivity or service life. Model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian prices were not established. Value depends on the work, supplied equipment and local support.
