Our verdict
Scag Freedom Z 48
Scag is a name commercial crews trust, and the Freedom Z is the cheapest way onto one. It brings the good stuff down to a homeowner-friendly size: a fabricated Hero deck that cuts cleanly, serviceable ZT-2800 transaxles, and a low centre of gravity that helps on uneven ground. The 48-inch deck is on the small side for the money, and there is no suspension seat, so it trades width and comfort for build quality. If you have a couple of acres and want a machine that outlasts a big-box mower two or three times over, it is a smart buy. If you just want the most deck per dollar, look elsewhere.
