Kubota ZD1021-60

The ZD1021-60 is worth comparing when you want a diesel mower but do not automatically need Kubota's larger ZD1200 platform. Its strongest buying argument is a manageable working package for repeated open-area mowing. Choosing it should start with the property and the maintenance plan, rather than a belief that any diesel will outlast any gas mower.

Identify the smaller ZD correctly

Kubota's US ZD brochure identifies the ZD1021-60 with a 21.6 gross hp, 898cc D902 diesel, a 60-inch ProDeck and a 9 mph maximum forward speed. The ZD1211-60 uses the larger D1105 engine and a different platform. These are distinct machines despite their matching nominal cut width.

The ZD1021 has hydraulic deck lift, a suspension seat and a shaft-drive PTO. The deck still contains a belt: shaft drive should not be interpreted as an entirely belt-free mower. The brochure also lists the maintenance lift as optional for the ZD1000 series. Have that option written into the quote if under-deck access is part of the appeal.

Compare a complete mowing job

Ask for a demonstration on a representative section of your property. Include turns, discharge management and the grass left for trimming. Maximum travel speed is not a promise of acceptable cutting speed, particularly when the finish matters more than a short stopwatch result.

Compare the controls with those of the Ferris IS 2600. Try the lift with your normal footwear, check comfortable lever reach and decide whether the seat gives enough adjustment. A short smooth-pavement ride cannot settle how either machine will feel over a working day.

Budget for the ownership routine

Obtain a quote for the mower, selected accessories and scheduled service. Ask who will perform the work and how the mower reaches the workshop. A service plan you can maintain is more useful than an unsupported engine-life prediction.

Kubota's 2026 US warranty guide lists 24 months of basic limited coverage for the applicable ZD category, including its deck. Canadian buyers should obtain Canadian terms. We have not verified an exact current price in either currency.

Our view: shortlist this model for a buyer who specifically wants the smaller diesel platform and can use it regularly. Use our diesel-versus-gas ownership checklist before paying a premium for fuel type alone.
