John Deere Z315E (42-in)
The Z315E is a sensible machine to investigate when you want a 42-inch residential zero-turn and have already confirmed that it can reach the lawn. The qualification matters: this mower's cutting width is considerably smaller than its complete footprint.
A 42-inch cut does not mean a 42-inch opening
John Deere lists 50.4 inches with the mower deck and 46.5 inches with the deflector raised for storage. Neither number makes it a fit for a 42-inch clear gate. Even a 48-inch opening deserves a careful measurement and demonstration rather than an assumption based on the nominal gate size.
The storage dimension is not permission to mow with the discharge protection raised. Follow the machine's manual and ask the dealer to demonstrate the approved configuration. See our gate-width guide for an example of how little clearance can remain once the arithmetic is done.
What the E-series package includes
The US specification lists a 20 hp 40 EXi V-twin, Hydro-Gear EZT-C drive and a 42-inch Accel Deep deck. A foot lift, height-setting dial and hour meter are part of the package. MulchControl and the material collection system are optional, so ask for a quote covering the way you actually intend to handle clippings.
For a first purchase, sit on the exact machine before choosing it from a specification table. Check your reach to the levers, whether entering and leaving the seat feels practical, and whether the storage route leaves room to manoeuvre. None of those questions is answered by a horsepower figure.
When to choose a different width
A wider cutting path is attractive only if you can use it. If access is restrictive, compare the Toro TimeCutter 34 before deciding to alter the gate. If access is generous, compare the Z315E with the existing Z320R 42 and decide which equipment differences justify the quoted price for you.
The stated limited warranty is three years or 200 hours, whichever comes first. Read the supplied terms rather than extending that promise to every accessory or type of use. We leave both price fields unfilled because a current local quote was not established during this review.
Research note: John Deere's official US specifications were checked October 5, 2026. This is a documentation-based assessment; no hands-on testing, ownership experience or comparative cut-quality result is claimed.
Our ZT Score
7.4/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.
- Cut quality (30%): 7.8/10. The 42-inch Accel Deep deck and available clipping-management options offer a useful homeowner cutting system. Comparative finish quality has not been independently measured for this review.
- Build & durability (25%): 7.0/10. EZT-C drive and the residential deck package suit homeowner use. The three-year/200-hour limited warranty is useful context, not proof of commercial-duty longevity.
- Comfort (20%): 7.3/10. The documented 18-inch sprung seat earns moderate comfort credit. We have not measured vibration or established how it compares with full suspension systems.
- Value (15%): 7.0/10. A provisional assessment of the base residential equipment, including foot lift and hour meter. No current delivered price is verified; optional MulchControl and collection equipment need separate quotes.
- Ease of use (10%): 8.2/10. The foot lift, height-setting dial and hour meter make everyday setup and service tracking convenient. The full machine width still requires careful access planning.
Provisional editorial assessment of documented equipment for residential use, checked October 5, 2026. No hands-on test or sufficiently verified model-specific owner consensus underpins this score. Cut and comfort scores estimate the design, not measured results. Revisit the score as ownership evidence and comparable delivered quotes become available.
