Our verdict

Gravely Pro-Turn ZX 52 Kawasaki

The Pro-Turn ZX 52 is a useful comparison for buyers who want a substantial deck without moving to a 60-inch cutting path. Model 991289 is the Kawasaki-powered configuration reviewed here. Its most interesting combination is a heavy deck, serviceable drive and more than one comfort feature, each of which needs to be understood separately.

What this particular ZX includes

The current Gravely specification sheet lists a 22 hp FX691V, ZT-3200 transaxles and a 7-gauge X-Factor 3 deck with additional spindle reinforcement. This is not the Pro-Turn 152 under another name. Both cut 52 inches, but their drive systems and documented equipment belong to different packages.

For repeated mowing, ask your dealer to demonstrate routine service access and explain which maintenance items you will handle yourself. A serviceable component is useful only when its requirements fit your ownership plan. Keep the operator manual with the machine and price the dealer's routine service if you do not intend to do it.

Two comfort features, two questions

Gravely specifies suspension caster forks and a high-back seat with suspension and padded armrests. The forks act at the front wheels; the seat provides another layer at the operator. That combination should not be renamed full chassis suspension, and it does not establish how comfortable the machine will feel to a particular person.

A useful demonstration lets you check whether the seat adjustment gives comfortable control reach and whether the front end behaves acceptably over the sort of modest unevenness you actually mow. Compare that experience with a Ferris ISX 800 if wheel and chassis movement are central to your shortlist. Our suspension comparison guide separates the mechanisms without assuming every system produces the same result.

A 52-inch cut still needs a wide route

The model sheet gives 67.3 inches with the chute and 56.2 inches without it. The latter is a dimensional reference, not an instruction to remove discharge protection. Have the dealer establish the approved configuration for your route before accepting delivery.

A 52-inch mower can be a deliberate choice for a collection of smaller properties, even when the budget allows a wider deck. The useful test is the complete route: access, turns, storage and the areas left for trimming. Deck width alone cannot settle that choice.

Who should compare it

Put the ZX on the list if construction and comfort equipment matter more than getting the largest deck for the purchase price. Also compare a Bobcat ZT3500 48 when a still narrower cutting path is attractive, while checking its complete dimensions separately.

The published limited warranty is four years or 750 hours. Ask for the applicable terms and an itemized delivered quote. We have not established current US or Canadian pricing, so this review makes no discount claim.

Our ZT Score

8.1/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.

  • Cut quality (30%): 8.3/10. The X-Factor 3 layout and reinforced blade mounting provide a strong documented cutting package. No comparative finish test was performed.
  • Build & durability (25%): 8.5/10. The 7-gauge deck and serviceable ZT-3200 transaxles support a substantial build assessment without claiming a measured lifespan.
  • Comfort (20%): 8.2/10. Front suspension forks and a suspended high-back seat address different sources of impact. They earn credit without being treated as full chassis suspension.
  • Value (15%): 7.2/10. The combination is relevant to repeated mowing, but the price premium over alternatives remains unverified and limits any value conclusion.
  • Ease of use (10%): 8.0/10. The mid-size cutting width and available height settings suit a varied route. Overall width and maintenance access still deserve a dealer demonstration.

Provisional editorial assessment from manufacturer documentation, not a hands-on test or a measured comparison. We have not established a reliable model-specific owner consensus. Value is conditional on a comparable delivered quote; no current model-specific US or Canadian price was verified. Cut and comfort scores assess the documented design and should be revisited as independent evidence becomes available.
