Ferris IS 600 48 Kawasaki
The IS 600 48 makes sense to investigate when you want chassis suspension but a larger cutting deck would complicate the route. It is a distinct step in Ferris's range, with a ZT-3200 drive package and a pivoting front axle. Do not assume every suspended Ferris uses the same front-wheel arrangement.
Match the engine to the model number
The US specification table identifies 5901908 as the 48-inch Kawasaki FS600V version: 18.5 gross hp, 603cc and a published 10 mph forward maximum. The same page also lists a 48-inch Briggs configuration with a different model number and output. This review follows the Kawasaki column throughout.
The 10-gauge fabricated deck cuts from 1.5 to 4.5 inches. Ask for a demonstration in the grass you maintain, particularly if dense seasonal growth is a frequent task. Engine output and travel speed alone cannot tell you whether the finished cut will be acceptable at your preferred pace.
Understand what moves
Ferris documents adjustable front and rear coil-over shocks, a pivoting front axle and a rear swing-arm. The mid-back seat includes armrests. Try the machine with the dealer's recommended suspension adjustment, then check reach to the controls and deck-height adjustment.
The ISX 800 52 is the relevant step-up comparison when you are weighing a different suspension layout and a wider deck. The 400S 48 offers another same-width reference within the brand. Compare their complete equipment and quotes instead of assuming that suspension alone makes them equivalent.
Measure before treating it as compact
Ferris lists 63 inches with the deflector down and 51 inches with it raised. Neither number makes a nominal 48-inch gate a suitable opening. Use the gate-width checklist, and distinguish the approved transport arrangement from the discharge protection needed while mowing.
The current warranty summary separates the machine's initial two unlimited-hour years and later four-year/500-hour limit from suspension coverage. It lists ten-year suspension coverage for eligible new riding mowers purchased after November 1, 2025; engine terms are separate. Confirm the supplied unit's complete policy and country before ordering.
Our buying view: shortlist the IS 600 when the 48-inch cut and adjustable chassis fit the property. Its appeal is the combination, not a promise of the smoothest ride or fastest route. The warranty comparison guide explains why years and hours belong beside the purchase quote. Research checked October 11, 2026.
Our ZT Score
7.7/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.
- Cut quality (30%): 7.6/10. Fabricated deck and documented height range form a useful cutting package; no comparative finish test establishes an advantage.
- Build & durability (25%): 7.8/10. ZT-3200 drive and documented chassis construction support repeated-use suitability without proving longevity.
- Comfort (20%): 8.0/10. Adjustable front and rear suspension earns credit, while the mid-back seat and individual adjustment limit any universal comfort claim.
- Value (15%): 7.2/10. The smaller suspended platform has a clear use case, but value still depends on the complete dealer quote.
- Ease of use (10%): 7.6/10. Height selection and accessible controls are practical; overall width needs checking despite the smaller deck.
Provisional research-based editorial judgement from manufacturer documentation, not a hands-on test. Comparative cut quality, comfort and service life have not been measured, and reliable model-specific owner consensus has not been established. Value is conditional on a current delivered quote, workload and local support; no such US or Canadian quote was verified.
