Our verdict

Walker S18 GHS C42

The S18 C42 is for a buyer who wants Walker's collection layout in a smaller engine and deck package. It combines the S18 tractor with a 42-inch C42 collection deck and seven-bushel GHS catcher. That is a different starting point from buying a larger mower and adding collection equipment later.

Confirm the current tractor and deck together

The S18 operator manual, for serial 190349 onward, specifies a 570cc Briggs & Stratton Vanguard rated at 18 hp, dual ZT-3100 transaxles and up to 7.4 mph forward speed. This is a carbureted gasoline configuration, distinct from the EFI C23i 48.

The current C42 heavy-duty collection deck is part DC42-2. The tractor manual's 42-inch dimension table still names DC42-1. Ask the dealer to identify the fitted deck and measure the complete machine; we have not silently transferred an older deck's dimensions to the current package. The gate-width guide explains why a 42-inch cut does not establish a 42-inch machine width.

Evaluate the collection routine

The seven-bushel catcher has a Grass-Pak full signal, while the Powerfil spout distributes material inside the box. The current manual also describes an electric Ogura PTO clutch with soft-start engagement. These are useful equipment distinctions, not measured evidence that the machine will collect every kind of growth without interruption.

Have the dealer demonstrate the intended clipping setup and the normal emptying routine. Identify the unloading point on your property before comparing hopper capacities. A larger box may change stop frequency, but capacity alone does not show which machine completes the route sooner.

Try the standard operator position

The model page identifies a standard seat. Do not treat a demonstration with optional suspension equipment as evidence of the base seat's comfort. Adjust the seat and try the separate Forward Speed Control under dealer instruction. The four-US-gallon fuel capacity is another item to plan around using representative consumption, not an assumed runtime.

Basic tractor coverage is two years. The ZT-3100 drive warranty is two years or 2,000 hours, whichever comes first, with full replacement coverage through 1,000 hours and proration thereafter. Engine coverage is separate. Our provisional assessment favours the S18 where compact collection and this control layout match the job; it leaves actual ride, pickup and delivered price to a local demonstration and quote.

Our ZT Score

7.7/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.

  • Cut quality (30%): 7.9/10. Dedicated collection deck and GHS distribution support the package; pickup untested.
  • Build & durability (25%): 7.8/10. ZT-3100 drive and shaft PTO are documented components; durability is not measured.
  • Comfort (20%): 7.1/10. Standard seat is a basic starting point; comfort and optional upgrades require evaluation.
  • Value (15%): 7.6/10. Focused compact collection may be useful; pricing and workload determine value.
  • Ease of use (10%): 7.8/10. Fill signal and soft-start PTO aid workflow, while separate speed control needs familiarization.

Provisional research-based editorial assessment of documented equipment, not a hands-on test. We have not measured finish, ride, productivity or service life. Model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian prices were not established. Value depends on the job, exact equipment and local service.
