Our verdict
Troy-Bilt Mustang Z54 XP
For the money, the Mustang Z54 XP gives you more deck than you'd expect. A fabricated 11-gauge deck and a Kohler twin at this price is real value, and the frame carries a lifetime warranty. The compromises are where you'd guess. The transaxles are the entry-level sealed type, and there's no seat suspension, so long sessions on rough ground get tiring. If you mow a couple of flat acres and want a fabricated deck without paying premium money, it's easy to recommend. Push it hard over years of rough terrain and you'll find its limits.
