Our verdict

Toro TimeCutter 42

The 42-inch TimeCutter is Toro's answer for a smaller, tidier yard, and it fits the brief. The compact deck slips through gates a wider machine cannot, the step-through front makes hopping off to move a branch easy, and Smart Speed lets you slow near beds without dropping blade speed. What you get at this price is a stamped deck and the entry-level EZT transaxles, so it is built for a flat suburban lot rather than acreage. If your yard is under two acres and you want the Toro name and dealer network without the Titan price, it makes sense. Just do not ask it to do commercial work.
