Our verdict

Scag Turf Tiger II 72 Kubota Diesel

The Turf Tiger II 72 Diesel is a wide-deck commercial mower for operators whose open-ground work and fuel arrangements justify a diesel package. This review covers STTII-72V-25KBD, with a 25 hp liquid-cooled Kubota engine. It is a separate configuration from the smaller gasoline Turf Tiger II 61.

Use the diesel column

The Scag product specifications list a ten-mph forward maximum for diesel machines, compared with twelve for gasoline versions. The twelve-US-gallon tank describes capacity, not working hours between fills. We have not measured fuel use or acres per hour.

Separate Hydro-Gear 16cc pumps and Parker 18ci wheel motors provide the hydraulic drive. That layout gives the buyer specific components and service requirements to discuss with the dealer; it does not prove a particular lifespan.

Understand the deck drive

The nominal 72-inch Velocity Plus deck uses Scag's reinforced Tri-Plate construction and cast-iron spindle housings with tapered roller bearings. A driveshaft transfers power to the deck, but the mower is not belt-free. Use the maintenance diagrams for the complete drive arrangement.

Our diesel-versus-gas guide helps frame the fuel-system decision. Diesel is not automatically the cheaper choice: purchase cost, annual hours, fuel supply and service access all belong in that comparison. Liquid cooling also means coolant and radiator attention, rather than a reason to ignore heat management.

Check the footprint and seat

Scag lists 83 inches with the discharge chute down and 73.75 inches in the transport configuration for the 72-inch deck. Measure the actual machine, storage entrance and trailer arrangement. Transport positioning does not authorize mowing with discharge protection raised.

The torsion-spring suspension seat sits on four isolation mounts. Try its adjustment with the intended operator; the presence of suspension does not establish all-day comfort. A wide mower can also leave extra trimming around narrow passages even when it covers open turf efficiently.

Read the ownership limits

The operator manual separates frame and major-drive coverage from other components: two years commercially, or three years/500 hours for non-commercial use. Engine and deck provisions require their own review.

Ask the dealer to demonstrate routine access and identify the correct recovery procedure before delivery. Our engine-off movement guide explains why dump valves are not a universal towing mode. This mower merits a shortlist when its width and diesel system solve the actual job; claimed savings and cutting results still need evidence.

Our ZT Score

8.0/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.

  • Cut quality (30%): 8.2/10. Velocity Plus construction and serviceable spindles support the cutting package; finish is untested.
  • Build & durability (25%): 8.5/10. Separate pumps, wheel motors and reinforced deck support commercial design; service life is unmeasured.
  • Comfort (20%): 8.0/10. Torsion-spring seat and isolation mounts offer adjustment; ride needs an operator trial.
  • Value (15%): 7.0/10. Diesel equipment may suit sustained work, but delivered price and fuel payback are unknown.
  • Ease of use (10%): 7.3/10. Serviceable components help ownership, while width and cooling-system tasks add constraints.

Provisional research-based editorial judgement, not a hands-on test. Cut quality, ride, productivity and service life have not been measured. Model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian prices were not established. Value depends on application and local support.
