What owners love
- +A driveshaft drives the deck instead of a long belt, so there is one less wear item
- +Velocity Plus deck with cast-iron spindles on tapered roller bearings
- +Wide stance and a low centre of gravity make it steady on uneven ground
- +Torsion-spring suspension seat on a four-point iso-mount system
- +Tiger Eye monitoring shows engine and system data at a glance
Worth knowing
- −The most expensive machine in our catalog
- −Heavy and wide, so trailering and gates need planning
- −Dealer-only, and priced for contractors rather than homeowners
Our verdict
Scag Turf Tiger II (61-in)
Scag built the Turf Tiger to be the last mower a contractor buys, and the engineering shows it. A driveshaft turns the deck instead of a long belt, which removes the part that most often strands a commercial machine mid-job. The Velocity Plus deck rides on cast-iron spindles with tapered roller bearings and top-mounted grease fittings, and the whole thing sits on a wide, low frame that feels planted on ground that would unsettle lighter mowers. It costs more than anything else we have reviewed and it is sold through dealers only. If you mow for a living, that price buys years of not thinking about your equipment.
