Scag SLS 42
The SLS 42 makes sense when you want a small Scag for your own lawn and can live without the seating and drivetrain upgrades found farther up the range. Its badge is less useful as a buying argument than its actual equipment: this is a residential mower with a 42-inch cut, not a scaled-down contractor's machine.
The configuration behind the name
This review covers SLS-42H-20PX, the 20 hp Briggs & Stratton PXi version in Scag's model table. It uses Hydro-Gear ZT-2200 EZT transaxles and has a stated forward maximum of 7 mph. Other SLS engine and deck combinations are separate configurations; their horsepower figures do not belong on this page.
The Hero deck combines fabricated dual-plate construction with reinforcement around the spindle area. That earns attention for its construction, but it does not prove the mower will leave a better finish than every stamped-deck competitor. Blade condition, setup and your mowing conditions still need a practical demonstration. Our deck-construction guide explains what to inspect beyond the fabrication label.
Buy the seat you actually tried
Scag lists a breathable seat with drainage and optional armrests. The foot-operated lift adjusts cutting height from 1.5 to 4.5 inches in quarter-inch steps. On a dealer visit, check whether you can operate that pedal comfortably while seated and whether the demonstration mower has added equipment.
For a different approach to standard seating and drive-service access at the same cutting width, compare the Gravely ZT X 42. Ask both dealers to show the maintenance points, not simply describe the machine as low-maintenance.
The warranty sets a clear boundary
The SLS-specific policy lists three years or 300 hours for several major components, with different provisions for deck repairs and spindles. Engine coverage is separate. Commercial and rental operation are excluded. Scag defines non-commercial use around the owner's single residential property, so discuss any additional mowing locations before purchase.
That distinction matters more than a general Scag warranty headline. The Liberty Z 52 is another same-brand comparison if you have room for a wider mower; obtain each machine's own coverage and configuration in writing.
Our buying view: shortlist the SLS for its compact cut and straightforward controls. Do not pay a premium solely for an expectation of commercial duty. Match the dealer's delivered quote, accessories and regional warranty to SLS-42H-20PX. Research checked October 9, 2026.
Our ZT Score
7.2/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.
- Cut quality (30%): 7.4/10. Reinforced Hero deck and fine height adjustment support a positive design assessment; comparative finish has not been tested.
- Build & durability (25%): 7.2/10. Fabricated deck construction earns credit, while the EZT package and residential-only warranty limit the intended duty assessment.
- Comfort (20%): 6.8/10. The breathable standard seat is useful basic equipment; optional armrests and unverified ride isolation limit this component.
- Value (15%): 6.8/10. A clear residential configuration has appeal, but any premium for the Scag name must be justified by the delivered quote and service support.
- Ease of use (10%): 7.6/10. Foot lift and quarter-inch settings are straightforward; pedal reach and maintenance access should be checked in person.
Provisional research-based editorial assessment, not a hands-on mowing test. Cut quality, ride comfort and service life have not been measured, and reliable model-specific owner consensus has not been established. Value reflects the documented equipment for residential use and remains conditional on a current delivered quote. No current US or Canadian dealer quote was verified.
