Gravely ZT X 42 Kawasaki
The ZT X 42 deserves attention from a homeowner who wants a small cutting width without giving up ordinary comfort adjustments or access to transmission oil service. Its strongest buying argument is the combination of those details. It should not be mistaken for a commercial Gravely simply because the deck is fabricated.
What is different about this EZT package?
The current Gravely specification sheet identifies 918008 as the 42-inch model with a 21.5 hp, 726cc Kawasaki FR651V. The manufacturer describes the drive as serviceable EZT, with ports for oil changes. That is a useful distinction when comparing mowers advertised with the broad EZT label.
Serviceability tells you that an oil-change provision exists; it does not prove the drive has the load capacity of a higher series or establish its life in hours. Ask the dealer for the maintenance procedure and schedule for the serial number being supplied. Include both the work you can reasonably do and any dealer service in the ownership comparison.
Standard equipment worth trying
The sheet lists a 22-inch high-back seat with armrests and a slider, tool-free control-arm adjustment, an hour meter and a foot-operated deck lift. Test the complete seating position: moving the seat to reach the pedal should not leave the lap bars awkwardly placed.
A seat-isolator kit appears in the accessories list. Standard armrests and a tall backrest should therefore not be described as full suspension. Our suspension guide separates those features and suggests useful demonstration questions.
Keep the cutting-width decision separate
The fabricated 11-gauge X-Factor deck cuts 42 inches, with a 1.5-to-4.5-inch height range. Forward speed is listed at approximately 7 mph. Those are specifications, not a promise to mow every lawn at top speed or to eliminate scalping.
Compare the Scag SLS 42 if you want another compact lap-bar mower. Move to the ZT HD 52 comparison only after deciding that a wider deck and its different drive package solve a real need.
Gravely lists mulching and collection accessories for the series. Confirm the exact 42-inch kit before purchase; our mulch-or-bag leaf guide can help avoid paying for a catcher that your fall routine seldom needs.
Our buying view: the standard adjustments and documented oil-service access make 918008 a sensible homeowner shortlist candidate. The listed unit warranty is three years or 300 hours, subject to its terms. Request a regional delivered quote and a demonstration before paying extra for equipment whose benefit you have not checked. Research checked October 9, 2026.
Our ZT Score
7.6/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.
- Cut quality (30%): 7.7/10. X-Factor deck geometry, anti-scalp provisions and multiple height settings support the design score; no superior cut has been demonstrated.
- Build & durability (25%): 7.5/10. Welded chassis and oil-service ports are useful ownership features, while EZT remains a residential drive comparison.
- Comfort (20%): 7.7/10. Standard tall seat, slider and armrests offer useful adjustment; no credit is given for the optional isolator or untested suspension performance.
- Value (15%): 7.2/10. The standard equipment is useful for a compact homeowner mower, but value depends on its delivered premium over similarly equipped alternatives.
- Ease of use (10%): 8.1/10. Tool-free arm adjustment, foot lift, hour meter and documented drive-service access support a strong usability assessment.
Provisional research-based editorial assessment, not a hands-on mowing test. Cut quality, ride comfort and service life have not been measured, and reliable model-specific owner consensus has not been established. Value reflects the documented equipment for residential use and remains conditional on a current delivered quote. No current US or Canadian dealer quote was verified.
