Scag Liberty Z 42
The Scag Liberty Z 42, SZL-42H-21FR, offers a compact residential package with an important distinction from the narrower Liberty Z: its manual provides for an optional hitch, while excluding the 36-inch model from that option. That does not make it a general-purpose tow vehicle. It does make exact model identification worthwhile before buying accessories.
A 42-inch configuration, not a scaled-down 52
Scag lists a 42-inch Hero deck and Hydro-Gear ZT-2800 drives on this version. The deck uses dual-plate reinforcement around the spindle locations. Spring-assisted foot lift sets cutting height from 1.5 to 4.5 inches in quarter-inch steps.
The engine is a Kawasaki FR651V; Scag's current model table lists this configuration at 21 hp. We retain that manufacturer-listed figure rather than substituting another rating convention. Fuel capacity is 3.5 US gallons and maximum forward speed is 7 mph.
The Liberty Z 36 is the narrower access alternative. The Liberty Z 52 changes more than cutting width: current larger Liberty models use a different drive package. Match the actual model and generation on a dealer quote.
Measure the whole mower
Published transport width is 43 inches and chute-down width is 54.5 inches. Length is 68.5 inches and listed weight is 595 pounds. Allow clearance beyond the stated dimensions; a transport-width specification does not grant permission to mow with a discharge guard displaced.
Seat fore-aft adjustment requires tools, and armrests are optional on the 36- and 42-inch versions. Confirm what is fitted to the quoted machine. Those details matter when comparing comfort equipment against a larger Liberty or another residential mower.
Keep accessory expectations realistic
The Liberty Z manual specifies a maximum towing weight of 250 pounds with the optional hitch and explicitly prohibits towing on slopes. The hitch is not standard equipment established by the specifications.
Our zero-turn lawn-cart guide explains why loaded cart weight, hitch limits and operating restrictions must all be checked. Do not buy this mower on the assumption that any garden cart is suitable.
Scag's non-commercial coverage for specified components extends to five years/750 hours, with engine, wear, battery and later labor limitations requiring separate attention. Commercial and rental use are excluded. The official Liberty Z model table is the starting point for equipment comparison; a written quote and warranty review complete it. This is a research-based shortlist candidate for compact residential mowing, not a claim of tested cut quality or towing performance.
Our ZT Score
7.2/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.
- Cut quality (30%): 7.4/10. Reinforced Hero deck and quarter-inch settings support setup, without measured finish evidence.
- Build & durability (25%): 7.5/10. ZT-2800 drives and reinforced spindle areas are meaningful specifications, not a durability test.
- Comfort (20%): 6.5/10. Tool-required seat movement and optional armrests limit standard convenience; ride is untested.
- Value (15%): 7.0/10. Compact residential package has clear equipment; prices and accessory costs are unverified.
- Ease of use (10%): 7.1/10. Spring-assisted lift helps, but accessory restrictions and full-width clearance need careful checks.
Provisional research-based editorial judgement, not a hands-on test. We have not measured finish, ride, productivity or service life. Model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian prices were not established. Value depends on the work, supplied equipment and local support.
