Our verdict

Kubota Z421KW-54

The Z421 is the Kubota you buy when the Z251 is not quite enough machine. It keeps what Kubota does well and adds the parts that matter, with folding ROPS and a high-back suspension seat fitted as standard rather than sold as extras, plus commercial-grade transaxles and a fabricated 54-inch deck. The Kawasaki FS730V is a known quantity that starts and keeps starting. You pay Kubota prices and buy through a dealer, and nothing about it looks exciting. For two or three acres where you want the safety kit included and a machine that will not surprise you, it is very easy to live with.
