Our verdict

John Deere Z515E (54-in)

The Z515E is the sensible middle of John Deere's homeowner range, and the warranty is the reason to look. Four years, single source, bumper to bumper, with Deere handling everything rather than pointing you at the engine maker. The Accel Deep deck cuts and bags well, folding ROPS and a seatbelt come standard, and the seat rides on two suspension springs. It is available at Lowe's, so you can buy it without hunting for a dealer. The seat is only mid-back, lights cost extra, and Deere parts are never cheap. For two or three acres and a buyer who wants the green badge and a strong warranty, it fits neatly.
