Our verdict

Hustler Raptor X 42

The Raptor X 42 is worth a look when the mower must handle ordinary lawn cutting now and potentially leaf collection later. Decide on that second job before signing a quote. A mower that suits your weekly route can become a different ownership proposition once collection equipment, installation and storage are included.

Identify the current 42-inch machine

Hustler's official parts database identifies 944470 as the 42-inch Raptor X with an 18 hp Kawasaki FR600. The current US product page lists Hydro-Gear ZT-2200 drive, a 7 mph forward maximum and a 1.5-to-4.5-inch cutting range. This review uses that US configuration; Canadian buyers should match the supplying dealer's model and serial information rather than assume every regional listing is identical.

The page currently gives conflicting steel-gauge descriptions in different sections. We therefore do not assign an exact deck gauge here. Have the dealer confirm the quoted machine's deck specification if that is central to your decision.

Price the whole mowing routine

The Raptor X accessory list includes a mulch kit and a two-bag, non-powered catcher with a stated 5.4-bushel capacity. Neither is evidence of measured leaf-pickup performance, and neither should be assumed to come with the base mower.

Ask for the exact compatible kit numbers, installation cost and required supporting equipment. Then consider where you will empty the bags and store the attachment. Our fall-leaf decision guide helps decide whether collection is needed at all; a light leaf drop and a lawn buried after a storm are different jobs.

Comfort upgrades are separate choices

Hustler describes a bolstered high-back seat and foot-operated deck lift. Flex Forks appear in the accessory list, so do not credit the base mower with that optional front suspension. Try the quoted setup on representative ground where a dealer can demonstrate it safely.

The Gravely ZT X 42 is a useful same-width comparison for standard equipment and service access. The larger Raptor XD 54 belongs on the list only if extra cutting width suits your route; an X and an XD are not interchangeable model names.

Our buying view: choose this Raptor around a complete equipment plan and local service support. The advertised residential limited warranty is three years or 300 hours. Obtain the applicable regional terms and a delivered quote before drawing a value conclusion. Research checked October 9, 2026.

Our ZT Score

7.2/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.

  • Cut quality (30%): 7.4/10. The compact deck, height range and listed clipping options make a credible home-lawn package; no measured finish or leaf-pickup advantage is claimed.
  • Build & durability (25%): 7.0/10. The documented ZT-2200 package suits residential comparison; conflicting gauge descriptions prevent credit for a particular shell thickness.
  • Comfort (20%): 7.2/10. Bolstered high-back seating earns credit, but optional Flex Forks are excluded and rough-ground comfort is untested.
  • Value (15%): 7.0/10. The accessory choices make the mower adaptable, provided the complete installed package remains competitive on a local quote.
  • Ease of use (10%): 7.8/10. Foot-operated deck adjustment and multiple supported clipping modes are practical, with additional handling required when using a catcher.

Provisional research-based editorial assessment, not a hands-on mowing test. Cut quality, ride comfort and service life have not been measured, and reliable model-specific owner consensus has not been established. Value reflects the documented equipment for residential use and remains conditional on a current delivered quote. No current US or Canadian dealer quote was verified.
