Our verdict
Ferris 400S 48
Ferris made its name on suspension, and the 400S is the cheapest way to get it. Even at this entry price you get rear coil-over shocks and a pivoting front axle, which on rough ground is the difference between a comfortable afternoon and a jarring one, and Ferris backs the suspension for five years. The ZT-2800 transaxles are a real step up from the sealed EZT units on cheaper machines. The 21.5 HP engine is adequate rather than muscular, and the steering takes adjustment. For two or three acres of bumpy ground where comfort matters, this is a smart entry into a serious brand.
