Our verdict

Exmark Lazer Z Diesel 72 UltraCut Series 4

The Lazer Z Diesel 72 is a specialist large-property candidate rather than a default upgrade from a smaller gasoline mower. Model LZS80TDYM724W0 combines the 25 hp Yanmar 3TNV80FT with a 72-inch UltraCut Series 4 side-discharge deck. The exact suffix matters because Exmark also sells a rear-discharge configuration and much wider diesel machines.

Keep the 72-inch specification separate

The selected model page lists an 11-mph maximum, 12-US-gallon total fuel capacity and one- to 5.5-inch cutting range. The page's wider-family descriptions include flex-wing decks and different engines; those are not equipment fitted to this 72-inch model.

Exmark's model-specific brochure identifies the Kanzaki KPS-18T hydrostatic transmission. The PTO arrangement uses an integrated wet clutch and a shaft to the deck gearbox. That does not make the complete mower belt-free or maintenance-free: the deck and other assemblies retain their own inspection and service requirements.

Match the deck to the mowing route

The side-discharge UltraCut Series 4 uses a formed 10-gauge top with 7-gauge skirts and reinforced spindle locations. Hydraulic deck lift is standard. Have the dealer demonstrate height selection and show the permitted transport arrangement before deciding how the machine will move between jobs.

A 72-inch deck needs more than 72 inches of working clearance once discharge equipment and obstacles are considered. Walk the route and check the trailer's usable space and capacity against the exact equipped machine. Our rear-versus-side-discharge guide explains why a different discharge layout is a separate buying choice, not just a change to a label.

Compare the operator area and diesel workload

The selected package includes suspension seating and RED control technology. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the controls and seat settings, then assess reach and comfort. These features support a useful equipment comparison, but we have not measured vibration, fatigue or mowing output.

The diesel-versus-gas guide helps organize the operating-cost questions. A larger tank and a diesel badge do not establish fuel economy or payback. Compare service support, expected annual use and delivered cost with a gas alternative such as the Lazer Z S 60 EFI.

Read the engine exception in the warranty

The linked US/Canada statement provides five-year/1,500-hour equipment coverage, with no hour limit for the first two years. It separately lists the engine at three years/2,000 hours, also without an hour limit in the first two years, and shorter provisions for belts, tires and the battery.

Our provisional assessment recognizes the commercial deck, hydraulic lift and seating provisions. Actual cut quality, operating cost and value remain dependent on conditions, a demonstration and the purchase terms.

Our ZT Score

8.1/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.

  • Cut quality (30%): 8.3/10. UltraCut 4 deck and hydraulic height control support the equipment; finish untested.
  • Build & durability (25%): 8.4/10. Documented diesel hydraulic drive and reinforced deck support commercial use, not a lifespan claim.
  • Comfort (20%): 8.2/10. Suspension seating and control adjustment support fit; ride has not been measured.
  • Value (15%): 7.3/10. Diesel cost justification depends on workload and local pricing, which are not established.
  • Ease of use (10%): 8.0/10. Hydraulic lift and RED information help operation, while the footprint needs planning.

Provisional research-based editorial judgement, not a hands-on test. We have not measured cut quality, ride, productivity or service life. Model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian prices were not established. Value depends on the application, equipment and local support.
