Our verdict

Cub Cadet PRO Z 148 S EFI

The PRO Z 148 S EFI is an archived commercial steering-wheel mower with a 48-inch deck. This review is a specification and inspection reference for an identified machine, particularly a used example. It is not a statement that Cub Cadet currently produces this model or that a local dealer has one available.

Match model 53TWEFJF050

The prior-year product page identifies a 25 hp Kohler EFI engine. Cub Cadet's detailed comparison names the Confidant EZT740, 747cc displacement and Hydro-Gear ZT-3400 transmission with 12cc pumps and charge pumps. The adjacent 154 S specification uses a different engine output and deck width; those figures should not be copied onto the 148 S.

The published maximum forward speed is 9.5 mph. Two 3.5-US-gallon tanks provide seven gallons total capacity. Neither figure establishes productivity or fuel consumption for a worn machine. Ask for a demonstration and inspect the service record before judging its condition.

Evaluate steering-wheel operation in person

This S version uses a steering wheel and foot-pedal control, rather than conventional lap bars. The archived equipment list includes a high-back suspension seat, adjustable armrests, seat belt and folding ROPS. Have the dealer explain the correct operating and protection configuration from the applicable manual.

Steering-wheel operation may be familiar, but familiarity is not evidence of safer slope capability. Do not transfer operating limits from another PRO Z model. Check smooth steering response and the prescribed safety functions with a qualified person; a sales demonstration should follow the machine's instructions.

The residential ZTS1 42 provides a useful smaller steering-wheel comparison. Its engine, drive and intended workload differ. If the commercial machine's extra equipment is unnecessary for your property, a smaller configuration may deserve consideration before accepting used-equipment maintenance risk.

Inspect the deck and service identity

The 148 S has a floating, fabricated 10-gauge deck with reinforcement, three blades and a published cutting range of one to five inches. A spring-assisted hand lever selects height. Inspect the shell, mounting points and height mechanism for condition rather than assuming the original specification describes today's machine perfectly.

Record the mower and engine identification numbers before ordering parts. Our model-and-serial guide explains why the sales name alone is insufficient. Use the used-mower checklist to organize records and a professional inspection.

Treat warranty figures as historical terms

The archived listing states two years without an hour limit for commercial use, or four years/500 hours for residential use. Those are the original listed terms, not a fresh warranty for a used buyer. Verify purchase date, transfer eligibility and any remaining coverage directly.

Our provisional score assesses the documented design. It cannot grade the condition of an individual used mower, predict its repair costs or substitute for a current quote and inspection.

Our ZT Score

7.6/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.

  • Cut quality (30%): 7.8/10. Reinforced floating deck and defined height range support the original design; current condition unknown.
  • Build & durability (25%): 7.8/10. ZT-3400 drive and reinforced deck are documented; used-machine wear is not assessed.
  • Comfort (20%): 7.7/10. Suspension seat and steering-wheel controls support fit, subject to a demonstration.
  • Value (15%): 7.0/10. Used value depends heavily on condition, repair needs and price, none established here.
  • Ease of use (10%): 7.6/10. Wheel-and-pedal operation may suit some buyers; service identity and condition require checks.

Provisional research-based editorial judgement, not a hands-on test. We have not measured cut quality, ride, productivity or service life. Model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian prices were not established. Value depends on the application, equipment and local support.
