Our verdict

Craftsman Z5800 54

The Z5800 is Craftsman's mainstream zero-turn, and it is built to a big-box price. A 24 HP Kohler 7000 twin gives it enough power for a 54-inch cut, a dual-range hydrostatic drive and a high-back cut-and-sew seat make it comfortable enough, and you can buy it at Lowe's or Walmart and have it quickly. What you are paying for at this price is a stamped steel deck, and owners do report the odd steering niggle and deck rust over time, so keep it clean and dry. For a flat suburban lot and a buyer who wants a zero-turn from a familiar name without spending much, it does the job. Just do not expect it to last like a fabricated-deck machine.
