Our verdict
Craftsman Z5400 46
The Z5400 is the one you can wheel out of Lowe's without a long talk with your bank. A 22 HP Kohler twin on a 46-inch deck is honest value, and the narrow deck actually helps on cluttered or gated yards where wider machines struggle. Just know what you're buying. It's a stamped deck and the entry-level EZT transaxles, which owners tend to see weaken after a few hundred hours of hard use. For a flat suburban lot of an acre or two, it does the job for years. For rough ground or real acreage, spend more on a fabricated deck and a serviceable transmission.
