Country Clipper Boss XL 60 Joystick 31 hp
Boss XL 60 puts Country Clipper's joystick concept into a substantial commercial package. It merits consideration when both the operating layout and deck-service access suit the crew. Neither feature replaces checking the machine's size, service support and warranty detail.
Specify the 31 hp joystick machine
The April 2026 product manual identifies 3160KAJ-9020 as the 60-inch joystick model with a 31 hp, 999cc Kawasaki FX921V. Hydro-Gear ZT-5400 transmissions accompany it, with a published maximum forward speed of 12.5 mph and a 10.25-gallon tank. Those figures describe equipment; they are not a tested hourly output or runtime.
This review does not cover the 35 hp FX1000 configuration. Ask for the complete model number on the quote so engine and control choices remain clear. The Charger 60 is a useful same-brand alternative to compare by actual equipment and delivered price.
Demonstrate the seat, steering and deck access
The Boss XL seat provides three inches of suspension travel along with isolation and adjustment features. Set it up before judging joystick reach. Our joystick-versus-lap-bar checklist helps organize a comparison without assuming that one handle suits every operator.
Country Clipper's ContourDTS arrangement combines a pivoting front axle with deck suspension. It should not be described as independent suspension at all four wheels or evidence of improved slope safety. Inspect how the deck moves and ask for a mowing demonstration under appropriate conditions.
The stand-up deck and Auto-Detach system are service features. Have the dealer show the complete manual procedure, including shutdown, secure support and return to operating position. Easier access does not eliminate those steps.
Plan around the full footprint and coverage
The manual lists 73 inches wide with the chute down, 61 with it raised, and 84.5 inches long. A nominal 60-inch cut therefore needs more room than a 60-inch opening. Confirm the approved transport configuration and turning space on the actual route. Cutting height runs from 1.5 to 5 inches in quarter-inch steps.
For US and Canadian buyers, the manual's Boss XL policy is five years or 1,200 hours, whichever comes first. Years one through three include parts and labor; years four and five are parts only. Engine and transmission policies are separate. Read those distinctions with our warranty comparison guide.
Our buying view: consider this Boss XL when its commercial drivetrain, joystick fit and service access justify the complete package. Get the precise unit, component coverage and local service arrangements in writing. Research checked October 16, 2026; cut and ride advantages remain untested.
Our ZT Score
8.1/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.
- Cut quality (30%): 8.2/10. Fine height steps and suspended deck provide useful setup choices; cut consistency has not been measured.
- Build & durability (25%): 8.4/10. ZT-5400 drive and commercial construction support the assessment without proving service life.
- Comfort (20%): 8.3/10. Suspension seat and multiple adjustments offer fit potential; joystick comfort is individual.
- Value (15%): 7.5/10. Commercial equipment and deck access may justify cost where used regularly; no comparable quotes establish savings.
- Ease of use (10%): 8.0/10. Stand-up service access and joystick layout are useful options, balanced against setup procedure and a wide footprint.
Provisional research-based editorial assessment of documented equipment, not a hands-on test. Cut finish, ride, service life and fuel consumption have not been measured by ZeroTurn. Reliable model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian prices were not established. Value depends on the complete quote, local support and actual work.
