Our verdict

Country Clipper Avenue 42 Joystick

Avenue 42 is a compact residential option whose main attraction is the combination of a single steering joystick and a deck that stands up for service. Those features deserve a demonstration. They do not automatically make it easier for every operator or suitable for commercial hours.

Identify the joystick version

The current product manual identifies 1842KAJ-A130 as the 42-inch joystick configuration with an 18 hp, 603cc Kawasaki FR600 engine. The twin-stick version has a different suffix. This review covers the joystick machine, rather than treating the two steering arrangements as separate new mower families.

Hydro-Gear ZT-2200 transmissions provide a published maximum of 7 mph, and the tank holds five gallons. These are equipment specifications, not a measured mowing rate or a fuel-endurance claim. The wider Boulevard 60 is a useful within-brand comparison when the work calls for a larger cutting swath and a different drive package.

Try the control and the height settings

Have the dealer set the seat and demonstrate the joystick's forward, reverse and turning response in a suitable clear area. Check whether you can make small corrections without an awkward reach. Our joystick-versus-lap-bar guide provides a comparison checklist without assuming that one control is universally better.

The deck adjusts from 1.5 to 4.5 inches in half-inch steps. Confirm that a setting suits your turf before buying; a preferred height between those steps is a practical reason to compare another mower. The John Deere Z315E 42 offers an alternative layout at the same nominal width.

Service access still requires a procedure

The stand-up deck is a service position. Ask the technician to demonstrate the complete shutdown, release, support and return-to-operation sequence from the manual. Do not confuse easy access with permission to touch blades while the machine can start.

The specification table gives 54 inches with the chute down and 43 inches with it raised. Plan the gate and storage route around the approved configuration. A 42-inch clear opening is not established as usable by a 42-inch cutting label.

Our buying view: shortlist Avenue when joystick fit and deck access solve specific ownership needs. The manual distinguishes three-year residential parts-and-labor coverage from just 30 days for commercial use, with separate engine and transmission policies. Ask how your actual use is classified. The product page also lists an hour meter as an accessory, so include one in the quote if required. Research checked October 15, 2026.

Our ZT Score

7.3/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.

  • Cut quality (30%): 7.3/10. The documented cutting range and welded deck support residential use; half-inch steps limit fine adjustment and finish is untested.
  • Build & durability (25%): 7.0/10. ZT-2200 drive and the residential warranty fit home use, without evidence of commercial-duty longevity.
  • Comfort (20%): 7.2/10. Adjustable seat and armrests earn moderate credit; individual joystick reach and ride need a demonstration.
  • Value (15%): 7.2/10. Joystick choice and deck access have practical value if used, conditional on the complete quote.
  • Ease of use (10%): 8.0/10. The stand-up deck and single control offer useful access and layout choices; learning and safe setup still matter.

Provisional research-based editorial assessment of documented equipment. ZeroTurn has not field-tested this configuration or measured cut finish, vibration, fuel use or service life. Reliable model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian quotes were not established. Value depends on the actual work, complete equipment price and local support.
