Our verdict
Big Dog Alpha MP 54
Big Dog is one of the lesser-known names in zero-turns, built in Kansas by a company with roots close to Bad Boy, and the Alpha MP is its mainstream homeowner machine. It gives you more than the price suggests: a reinforced 7-gauge welded steel deck where rivals use thin stamped steel, serviceable ZT-2800 transaxles, and big BigBite drive tyres for a smooth ride. A premium seat, engine guard and LED lights come standard, and belts change without tools. The drivetrain is residential rather than commercial and it tops out at 7.5 mph. For a few acres and a buyer willing to look past the big brands, it is a well-built machine for the money.
