Bad Boy MZ Rambler 42 Kawasaki
The MZ Rambler 42 puts much of its appeal into the deck shell. For a homeowner who wants a compact cut and substantial steel, that is a reasonable starting point. The rest of the machine still needs a separate assessment: deck thickness does not turn an entry residential drivetrain into a commercial one.
Match the engine to the model code
This review covers the Kawasaki version, BMZ42FR651, identified in the 2026 MZ operator manual. The product specification lists a 21.5 hp, 726cc FR651V, dual Hydro-Gear ZT-2200 drive and a forward maximum of 6 mph. Briggs and Kohler versions also exist; a price advertised simply for an MZ Rambler may refer to one of those configurations.
Ask for the full model code on the quote. A financing payment for the family is not a delivered cash price for this engine choice, so we have not inserted one into the price fields.
What the deck does and does not tell you
Bad Boy specifies a sloped, formed-and-welded 7-gauge deck with reinforced edges. Cutting height runs from 1.5 to 4.5 inches using a foot-assisted lift and dial. That combination is attractive if you prioritize the shell and convenient height selection.
It does not establish a measured cut-quality advantage, an impact guarantee or a longer life for belts, bearings and transmissions. Our stamped-versus-fabricated deck guide provides a broader inspection checklist. The wider MZ Magnum 54 is the relevant same-brand alternative when cutting width, rather than simply heavier-looking equipment, is the unresolved question.
Check access and seating in person
The manufacturer describes an adjustable cushioned seat and flip-up floorboard. Have the dealer demonstrate service access with the mower safely shut down. Then check whether the seating position and pedal placement work together for you. Do not infer full suspension from the appearance of the cushion.
The Gravely ZT X 42 provides another same-width comparison, particularly for standard seating adjustments and the manufacturer's stated transmission-service provisions.
Our buying view
Shortlist this Rambler when you value its deck construction and can accept a basic residential drive package. The 2026 MZ warranty states two years or 200 hours for covered defects; engine coverage and other components have separate terms. Confirm regional coverage, setup and service transport costs with the supplying dealer. A thick deck is one useful feature, but the mower should earn its place through the complete ownership package. Our ZT Score
7.3/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.
- Cut quality (30%): 7.5/10. The reinforced deck and foot-assisted height selection are useful design features; the score does not treat steel thickness as proof of mowing finish.
- Build & durability (25%): 7.4/10. Thick formed-and-welded deck earns credit, balanced against the basic EZT package and limited coverage period.
- Comfort (20%): 6.8/10. Adjustable cushioning is useful basic equipment, but no full suspension or measured ride improvement is established.
- Value (15%): 7.0/10. The deck-focused specification may suit a homeowner, although the Kawasaki configuration must be priced separately from advertised family offers.
- Ease of use (10%): 7.8/10. Height dial, foot assist and flip-up floorboard support routine operation and access, subject to an in-person fit check.
Provisional research-based editorial assessment, not a hands-on mowing test. Cut quality, ride comfort and service life have not been measured, and reliable model-specific owner consensus has not been established. Value reflects the documented equipment for residential use and remains conditional on a current delivered quote. No current US or Canadian dealer quote was verified.
