Our verdict
Ariens IKON XD 42
The IKON XD 42 is the compact Ariens for a smaller lot, and it brings more than the price suggests. You get a fabricated 11-gauge deck and a fully welded frame, both a clear step above the stamped decks and bolted frames common at this money, wrapped around a proven commercial-grade Kawasaki engine. It fits through a gate and it is easy to buy, sold at Lowe's rather than dealer-only. The trade is the sealed EZT transmission, which you replace rather than service, and there is no suspension seat. For a flat yard under two acres, it is a lot of build quality for the outlay.
