Zero-Turn Mower Dealer Demo Checklist: Compare Before You Buy

A short drive is only part of a useful demonstration. Match the equipment, observe the cut and record the tasks that decide whether a mower fits your work.

A dealer demonstration should answer the questions a specification sheet cannot: whether the controls fit you, how the machine handles your normal mowing task and which equipment is needed to make the purchase useful. A quick lap around a parking area leaves most of those questions open.

Use a consistent observation sheet when comparing shortlisted new machines. This is a fit-and-workflow comparison, not a mechanical inspection protocol for a used mower or a promise that one demonstration predicts years of reliability.

Before the appointment: define the job

Write down the grass area, connecting passages, normal cutting height and intended clipping method. Identify a representative demonstration area that the dealer agrees is appropriate for the machine. Ask about permission to cut, delivery arrangements and any demo charges in advance.

Request the exact model number, deck and engine configuration. If the available demonstration machine differs from the quotation, list every difference. A different seat, tire package or collection attachment can change what you experience. Leave the untested configuration marked as untested instead of assuming the result transfers.

First check: equipment and operator fit

With the machine safely parked, have the dealer explain the controls and demonstrate the applicable safety checks. Read the operating instructions and receive training before driving. Exmark's safety resources reinforce that familiarization material does not replace the operator manual.

Adjust the seat and controls as permitted, then check reach to the steering controls, brake and height adjustment. Record specific observations: an awkward pedal reach is more useful than writing that a mower feels strange. Ask whether an adjustment or a separately priced part addresses it.

For example, the Grasshopper 328G4 EFI 61 distinguishes its standard seat from an optional suspension upgrade. Note which one you tried. The Kubota ZG327PA-60 provides a different question to assess: whether its foot-operated hydraulic deck lift suits you.

Driving: observe ordinary movements

After instruction, evaluate ordinary starts, stops and turns in the approved area. Do not attempt a slope or difficult manoeuvre just to discover the machine's limit. Ask the dealer to assess any uncertain part of the property against the exact manual.

Observe control reach and the attention required around your usual obstacles. Include the path between cutting areas and the approach to storage. A deck may pass a gate yet leave insufficient room to turn beyond it; use the clearance checklist to record the complete route.

Cutting: keep the comparison fair

Compare at the same intended cut height and clipping method on reasonably comparable growth. Record whether the grass is dry or damp and whether the areas differ noticeably. A pass over short, dry grass cannot establish how another machine will handle a heavier collection job.

Inspect the result after the dealer has safely stopped the equipment. Note missed strips, visible clumps or uneven areas without diagnosing their cause yourself. Ask whether the machine was set up correctly and whether a second demonstration is needed. Do not convert an unexplained result into a brand-wide conclusion.

Include the work around the cutting

For a collector such as the Exmark Navigator 48 EFI, observe the trip to the unloading point and the emptying process. Record whether powered dumping or other optional equipment was used. Compare the same task on the other candidate.

Time the complete task if conditions are suitable, separating cutting, turning, emptying and remaining trimming. Keep those observations tied to the particular area and conditions. They are your demo record, not a universal acres-per-hour rating.

Leave with a written decision record

Keep the model identity, equipment list, observations and unresolved questions with the quote. Ask for separate prices for the options demonstrated, delivery and initial setup, plus applicable warranty and local service arrangements. Mark any unconfirmed cost or feature clearly.

A useful outcome can be a purchase, a second demonstration or removing a model from the shortlist. The important result is knowing which questions the demonstration answered and which it did not. Research checked October 23, 2026; no hands-on tests by our editorial team are claimed.
