Walker B23 M48 Mulching
Choose the B23 M48 for a deliberate mulching routine, not because you expect every Walker to collect clippings. This is the non-collection B23 tractor paired with the DM48-2 M48 deck. It offers a distinct alternative to the collection-oriented C23i and T27i machines already in our catalog.
Start with the clipping method
The M48 deck has a dedicated housing, recirculating baffles and two blades with recirculating hubs. Those are relevant design features for returning material to the lawn. They are not evidence that this machine will mulch every quantity of growth successfully at any travel speed.
Ask for a demonstration at the cutting height and growth interval you intend to maintain. Inspect the finish and remaining material rather than accepting a promise based on deck width alone. If removing material is central to the job, compare the C23i GHS 48 before ordering a non-collection tractor.
Learn the control layout
The B23 uses individual steering levers with a separate Forward Speed Control lever. The CH680 is a carbureted 674cc engine rated at 22.5 hp, driving through dual ZT-3100 transaxles. Walker lists a maximum forward speed of 8 mph; the appropriate mowing speed depends on the work.
Take time to try starts, stops and the control reach under dealer instruction. The standard Comfort Seat and optional suspension seat are different equipment choices. Do not assume a photograph shows the exact seat in your quote.
Measure beyond the cutting width
With the M48 fitted, Walker publishes a 49-inch width and 90.75-inch length. A nominal 48-inch opening therefore is not enough merely because the deck cuts 48 inches. Check the complete route and approach using our gate-width checklist.
The 4.7-US-gallon tank is another planning detail. Compare it with measured fuel use for your route, not with an assumed all-day runtime. The EFI B27i 52 is a different engine and deck package rather than a direct like-for-like upgrade.
Walker provides two-year tractor coverage; the ZT-3100 drive coverage is two years or 2,000 hours, with proration after 1,000 hours. Engine coverage is separate. Our provisional verdict favours the B23 for buyers who specifically want its mulching configuration and control arrangement, subject to a turf demonstration and a complete local quote.
Our ZT Score
7.8/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.
- Cut quality (30%): 8.1/10. Dedicated mulching baffles and recirculating hubs support the design assessment; finish is untested.
- Build & durability (25%): 7.9/10. ZT-3100 drive and shaft PTO are documented commercial components, with no longevity claim.
- Comfort (20%): 7.5/10. Comfort Seat provides the baseline; suspension is optional and operator fit remains untested.
- Value (15%): 7.7/10. Focused mulching configuration may suit maintained routes; delivered price and need for collection remain decisive.
- Ease of use (10%): 7.8/10. Front-deck layout and separate speed control offer a distinct workflow, but training and overall width matter.
Provisional research-based editorial assessment of documented equipment, not a hands-on test. Cut finish, ride, fuel consumption and service life have not been measured by us. Model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian quotes were not established. Value depends on the quoted configuration, workload and local service.
