Our verdict

Scag Cheetah II 72 Kawasaki EFI Side Discharge

The Scag Cheetah II 72 Kawasaki EFI, SCZII-72V-38FX-EFI, deserves consideration where a genuinely wide deck can stay productive for much of the route. It is less convincing when narrow openings and repeated repositioning make the extra width unusable. Start with the work area, not the 16 mph headline.

Separate cutting width from travel speed

This configuration uses a 72-inch Velocity Plus side-discharge deck and Kawasaki FX Series EFI power. Scag's model table lists 38 hp; we retain that published figure rather than substituting a rating from a different engine listing.

The two-speed Hydro-Gear ZT-5400 system provides forward maxima of 12 mph in low range and 16 mph in high range. Neither figure is a tested mowing rate. Grass condition, turns and the required finish determine the usable pace. Our mowing-time guide explains why multiplying width by maximum speed overstates real output.

Measure the route before the trailer

Scag lists 83 inches of width with the chute down and 73 inches in transport position. Allow clearance beyond the transport dimension and assess turning space as well as straight openings.

The published 72-inch weight range is 1,399–1,427 pounds across configurations. That range is not an exact scale weight for this engine option. Obtain the supplied machine's equipped weight when planning transport, especially if accessories are added.

The Cheetah II 61 is the natural smaller-deck comparison. A narrower mower can be the better route choice even when a 72-inch deck is affordable.

Know what the suspension moves

The operator platform has five settings from soft to firm, with a coil-over shock and an iso-mounted seat. This is an operator suspension system; it should not be confused with suspension at all four wheels. The suspension comparison helps frame a useful demonstration.

The deck has reinforced tri-plate construction, cast-iron spindle housings with tapered roller bearings, and quarter-inch height settings from 1.25 to 5 inches. Those construction features support the equipment assessment, but this review does not claim measured finish, vibration reduction or durability.

The buying decision

Use the official model table to distinguish this side-discharge Kawasaki configuration from rear-discharge and Vanguard versions. Scag lists two-year commercial or three-year/500-hour non-commercial machine coverage, with different deck, spindle, wear-item and engine terms in its warranty policy.

Shortlist it for sustained wide-area work, then compare a representative route demonstration and delivered quote. Its capacity to travel quickly is useful only when access, conditions and the required finish let the complete package work effectively.

Our ZT Score

8.0/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.

  • Cut quality (30%): 8.2/10. Velocity Plus deck and fine height increments provide a strong setup package; finish is untested.
  • Build & durability (25%): 8.5/10. Reinforced deck, cast-iron spindle housings and ZT-5400 drive support the hardware assessment.
  • Comfort (20%): 8.2/10. Five-setting operator suspension provides adjustment, without a measured comfort claim.
  • Value (15%): 7.0/10. Wide-area capability matters only on suitable routes; delivered cost and actual productivity are unknown.
  • Ease of use (10%): 7.3/10. Two travel ranges and deck adjustment are useful, while width and transport planning limit versatility.

Provisional research-based editorial assessment, not a hands-on test. Cut finish, ride, fuel use and service life have not been measured. Reliable model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian prices were not established. Value remains conditional on local support, supplied equipment and the intended work.
