Our verdict

Kubota Z242KW-48

The Z242KW-48 puts a suspension seat and foot-operated deck lift into Kubota's residential Z200 range. It is worth considering when operator fit matters as much as deck size. The KW suffix is important: a quote for the Kohler-powered Z242KH is not a quote for the same engine and seating package.

Know which 48-inch Z200 you are comparing

Kubota's Canadian model specification lists a Kawasaki FR Series gasoline engine rated at 21.5 gross hp, with 726cc displacement. The drive is Hydro-Gear ZT-3100, maximum forward speed is eight mph and fuel capacity is 4.3 US gallons. We have retained the published FR family identification rather than guessing an engine suffix from another mower.

This residential model is distinct from the Z411KW-48, despite their equal cutting widths. Compare the full engine, drive, operator area and warranty instead of using deck width as the only selection criterion. The Z242 also differs from the older Z251 already in our catalog.

Try K-Ride and K-Lift together

The US Z200 overview specifies the suspension seat for the Z242KW and Z252KW models. It describes a 21-inch high back and 1.5 inches of suspension travel, alongside measures to reduce vibration at the steering levers and step plate.

Set the seat correctly and check control reach before judging the fit. These provisions are not independent suspension at each wheel, and the specification does not establish how the mower will feel on your lawn. Our suspension guide explains why the location of suspension matters.

K-Lift uses a foot pedal and ratchet arrangement for the deck. Ask for a demonstration of raising the deck, selecting height and returning it to the mowing position. The 48-inch RCK48P-200Z deck has three blades, a fabricated shell and a published 1.5- to 4.5-inch height range.

Measure the equipped machine

A 48-inch cutting width is not a 48-inch passage requirement. Check the mower with its discharge equipment and any proposed attachment fitted. Also check the storage entrance and the permitted ROPS configuration using the exact manual. A folding structure should not be treated as permission to mow without the required rollover protection.

Read the warranty for your country

The 2026 US warranty guide lists Z200 coverage at 48 months or 300 hours, whichever comes first, with Kawasaki engine coverage administered separately. Kubota Canada lists 36 months/300 hours for Z100/Z200 and 24 months/300 hours for the mower deck. Confirm eligibility and the applicable purchase-year terms with the dealer.

Our provisional judgement favors the specified seat, deck lift and drive combination for residential use. Actual cutting results, ride comfort and value still depend on a demonstration, delivered quote and service support.

Our ZT Score

7.6/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.

  • Cut quality (30%): 7.5/10. Fabricated three-blade deck and defined height range support the package; cut untested.
  • Build & durability (25%): 7.6/10. ZT-3100 drive and fabricated deck are documented; service life not measured.
  • Comfort (20%): 7.9/10. Standard suspension seat and vibration-reduction provisions support operator fit.
  • Value (15%): 7.4/10. Useful residential equipment, but delivered price and service costs are unknown.
  • Ease of use (10%): 7.8/10. Foot-operated K-Lift and straightforward controls support regular use.

Provisional research-based editorial judgement, not a hands-on test. We have not measured cut quality, ride, productivity or service life. Model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian prices were not established. Value depends on the application, equipment and local support.
