Our verdict

John Deere Z950R 60 7Iron PRO Side Discharge

The Z950R 60 puts the emphasis on the operator's controls as well as the cutting deck. Its R-series package combines a 27 gross hp gasoline engine with power height adjustment and a cross-ported hydraulic drive. It merits a closer look when repeated deck adjustments and operator fit are important parts of the job.

Specify 7Iron PRO side discharge

John Deere's ordering reference identifies base code 2197TC and deck option 1504 for the 60-inch 7Iron PRO side-discharge arrangement. The 60-inch FastBack PRO rear-discharge option is a different deck. Keep the discharge type on the quotation and compare it against the way you handle clippings and nearby obstacles.

The Canadian Z950R specification identifies the 852cc Kawasaki FX850V and 11.5-US-gallon tank. These are gasoline specifications; the Z994R and Z997 diesel engines do not apply. The stamped 7-gauge side-discharge deck also should not inherit the rear-discharge deck's fabricated construction description.

Try the adjustment controls together

Power height adjustment and the one-touch dial are central to this configuration. Have the dealer demonstrate selecting the cutting height and using the transport lock. Then check whether you can operate the controls comfortably after adjusting the seat. The published height range is one to 5.5 inches in quarter-inch increments.

The ordering guide includes the fully adjustable suspension seat in the base configuration but also lists an alternative isolated comfort seat. That means the actual seat needs to be identified on a dealer's offer. The quote checklist covers the equipment differences that a shared model name can conceal.

Compare controls, not just horsepower

The Z955M EFI 60 offers a different engine and M-series package. Compare the controls you will use, quoted seat and service requirements rather than judging only the engine rating. The EFI-versus-carburetor guide helps keep that engine choice separate from chassis features.

Deere publishes up to 12 mph for travel. Do not convert that directly into completed acres per hour: turning, obstacles and acceptable cutting quality affect the actual job. Coverage is advertised as 36 months or 1,500 hours, with no hour limitation in the first 24 months, subject to the applicable terms. Our provisional verdict recognizes the adjustment controls and drive arrangement, while reserving judgement on real cutting results and delivered value until a matched demonstration and written quote.

Our ZT Score

8.2/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.

  • Cut quality (30%): 8.3/10. 7Iron PRO deck and quarter-inch height settings support the package; cut quality untested.
  • Build & durability (25%): 8.3/10. Cross-ported heavy-duty drive and 7-gauge deck are substantial documented equipment.
  • Comfort (20%): 8.2/10. Adjustable suspension seat supports fit, but alternative seat selections must be checked.
  • Value (15%): 7.6/10. Control equipment may justify the package for some routes; delivered pricing is unknown.
  • Ease of use (10%): 8.5/10. Power height adjustment, dial and transport lock provide useful control features.

Provisional research-based editorial judgement, not a hands-on test. We have not measured cut quality, ride, productivity or service life. Model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian prices were not established. Value depends on the application, equipment and local support.
