Hustler Diesel Z 60 Side Discharge
The Diesel Z 60 is a full-size commercial mower built around a liquid-cooled Perkins diesel and a separate pump-and-wheel-motor drive. Consider it when that engine and hydraulic arrangement fit your maintenance resources and working routine. Choosing diesel should follow a cost and service comparison, rather than an assumption that its fuel type guarantees a lower ownership cost.
What this 60-inch configuration includes
Hustler's Diesel Z specifications identify a 25 hp, 1,130cc Perkins engine, tandem 21cc Hydro-Gear pumps and Parker TG wheel motors. This review concerns the 60-inch side-discharge deck. A 60-inch rear-discharge version also exists, so deck width alone is not a complete ordering description.
The welded 7-gauge deck has a published cutting-height range of one to 5.5 inches. The manufacturer specification sheet describes a foot-operated lift; the electric lift shown among accessories is a separate kit. Have the dealer demonstrate the lift that will actually be supplied, especially if repeated height changes are part of your route.
Plan around the whole machine
The nominal 60-inch cutting width becomes 66 inches of machine width with the chute raised in Hustler's dimension table. That distinction matters at connecting passages and storage entrances. Use the gate-width guide to check the approach and turning room, then verify the equipped machine's dimensions before purchase.
The I3M suspension seat is part of the documented package. Adjust it during a demonstration and assess control reach; a suspension label cannot predict comfort for every operator. The 14.4-US-gallon tank provides capacity for planning fuel stops, but it does not establish runtime or fuel economy. The 11.5-mph maximum likewise is not a guaranteed cutting speed in your conditions.
Compare the diesel decision explicitly
The gasoline Super Z 60 is a useful same-brand comparison, but it has a different engine package. Obtain delivered quotes and ask each dealer to explain local engine and hydraulic service support. Our diesel-versus-gas guide frames the relevant questions without assuming a fuel-saving percentage.
Hustler advertises five years/1,200 hours, with no hour limit in the first two years, while the engine is separately listed at three years. Confirm the applicable written terms and exclusions. Our provisional assessment recognizes the substantial hydraulic package and suspension seat; a cut demonstration and local quote still determine whether this is the right purchase.
Our ZT Score
8.0/10 — our research-based editorial assessment using the ZeroTurn scoring method.
- Cut quality (30%): 8.1/10. Welded 7-gauge deck and height range support the cutting package; finish untested.
- Build & durability (25%): 8.5/10. 21cc pumps and separate wheel motors are substantial components; service life unmeasured.
- Comfort (20%): 8.0/10. I3M suspension seat offers adjustment; actual ride and fit need a demonstration.
- Value (15%): 7.4/10. Diesel and hydraulic equipment may suit intensive work, but delivered costs and savings are unknown.
- Ease of use (10%): 7.8/10. Foot lift and integrated lever parking arrangement are documented; large dimensions require planning.
Provisional research-based editorial judgement, not a hands-on test. We have not measured cut quality, ride, productivity or service life. Model-specific owner consensus and comparable delivered US/Canadian prices were not established. Value depends on the application, equipment and local support.
