Our verdict

Cub Cadet Ultima ZT2 54

The ZT2 is the sensible step up from Cub Cadet's Ultima ZT1, and the money mostly goes to the right places. You move up to a serviceable Tuff Torq transmission, gain LED lights and a nicer seat, and keep the excellent AeroForce fabricated deck and the lifetime frame warranty. Worth flagging: some owners report PTO relay trouble, a known Cub Cadet niggle, so factor a dealer visit into ownership. The seat has a polymer suspension rather than a true suspended one, so rough ground still registers. For a couple of acres where you want a strong cut and a long warranty, it is good value.
