Zero-Turn Mower Troubleshooting: Common Problems and Fixes

Most zero-turn faults are not the expensive thing you are afraid of. A mower that pulls to one side, cuts unevenly or suddenly refuses to move usually has a cheap, findable cause, and the hydrostatic rebuild people dread is far down the list rather than at the top of it.

This guide works through the faults that actually turn up, cheapest and most likely first, so you can rule out the simple stuff before you call anyone.

Before you start

Every check below happens with the engine off.

  • Park on level ground, set the brake, remove the key.
  • Pull the spark plug wire before touching anything near the blades. On a battery machine, remove the safety key and the battery.
  • Let the engine cool. Exhausts stay hot enough to burn for a long while.
  • If you need to get underneath, use ramps or a jack with stands. Never a jack alone.

The cut is uneven or streaky

The most common complaint, and the most commonly misdiagnosed. Work through it in this order.

Tyre pressure. Check all four against the sticker, not by eye. A few psi difference between rear tyres tilts the whole deck and gives you a stepped cut. This is the single most frequent cause and it costs nothing to fix.

Blade condition. Dull blades tear rather than slice, which leaves pale, ragged tips that brown a day later. Bent blades cut at different heights. Both look like a deck problem and are not.

Deck level. Check side to side and front to back against the manual's spec. Decks drift out of level over a season of knocks.

Grass and speed. Cutting too fast, or taking too much off wet or tall grass in one pass, leaves strips no amount of adjustment will fix. Slow down and raise the deck for the first pass.

A packed deck. A crust of dried clippings underneath kills the airflow that stands grass up before the blade reaches it. Our maintenance guide covers cleaning it safely, and the short version is a plastic scraper and a garden hose, never a pressure washer.

One side is weak, or it pulls

Each drive wheel has its own pump and motor, so when one side goes soft the machine crabs sideways. Before assuming the hydro is dying, check these.

Tyre pressure again. Uneven pressure alone will make it pull.

A dragging brake. A brake that is not fully releasing on one side behaves exactly like a weak transmission.

Control linkage. If one lever feels sloppy or does not travel as far as the other, the drive on that side never gets full input. The hydro can be perfect and you would still feel it.

Air in the system. Trapped air, sometimes called cavitation, stops a pump building pressure. It is common after a fluid change and is fixed by bleeding: jack the rear, disengage the drive, and cycle the levers back and forth several times.

Hydro fluid. Low or dirty fluid makes one side sluggish. Whether you can service it depends on your machine, which is worth knowing before you buy.

Only after all of that does a worn pump or motor become the likely answer, and you will usually hear it whining first.

It runs but will not move at all

Engine fine, machine going nowhere. Almost always one of three things.

The bypass levers. Every zero-turn has freewheel or bypass rods that disengage the drive so you can push it. If they are still pulled out, the mower will not move. Check this first, every time, because it is free and it is embarrassing how often it is the answer.

The drive belt. Look under the rear for the belt that turns the hydro pumps. If it has snapped or jumped a pulley, the engine runs happily and nothing happens. A failed idler or tension pulley does the same.

Hydro fluid pressure. Low fluid or a failed pump gives you the same symptom. This is the expensive branch, which is why you check the free ones first.

It bogs down or loses power in thick grass

Air filter. A clogged filter starves the engine and is the usual culprit. It is a five-minute check.

Fuel filter and cap. A blocked fuel filter, or a fuel cap whose vent has plugged, both strangle fuel delivery. A plugged cap creates a vacuum in the tank, and the classic symptom is a mower that runs fine for twenty minutes then dies, then starts again once the cap is loosened.

Blades and deck. Dull blades and a packed deck make the engine work far harder than it should.

Overheating. Clogged cooling fins and a grass-blocked intake screen make an air-cooled engine run hot and shut down.

It will not start in spring

Nine times out of ten this is fuel. Petrol left in the tank over winter breaks down and gums the carburettor, which is exactly why storage with fuel stabiliser matters.

Before assuming the worst, check the safety interlocks. Zero-turns will not crank unless the brake is set, the blades are disengaged, and the levers are in the neutral or outward position. A failed seat switch produces the same dead silence and is a common, inexpensive fault.

Then check the battery, which loses charge over winter, and the spark plug.

It shakes badly

Some vibration is normal. A new, heavy vibration is not, and running it makes things worse.

Check for debris wrapped around the spindles, then blade balance, since a blade sharpened unevenly shakes the whole deck. After that look at spindle bearings, worn pulleys and the engine mounting bolts, which do work loose.

When to stop and call a dealer

Some things are not driveway jobs. Take it in if you find metal shavings in the hydro fluid, if a pump or motor is whining under load after you have checked everything else, if fluid is leaking from a transaxle, or if the fault is electrical beyond a switch and a battery.

There is no shame in that line. Hydrostatic work needs the right parts and knowledge, and a bad repair on a drive system is expensive twice.

The pattern worth remembering

Almost every one of these starts with something cheap. Tyre pressure, a bypass lever, a filter, a belt, a dull blade. Check those before you assume the drivetrain is failing, and most of the time you will be mowing again in half an hour.
